Medieval Sandwich and Walmer Castle

From the Port of Dover, we will head north to the ancient Cinque Port of Sandwich, one of the best-preserved medieval towns in the country. After strolling through Sandwich on a guided walk and hearing quirky stories about its past and present, we will follow the coastal route to Walmer Castle via well-known golf courses and other Kentish towns and villages. In Walmer Castle, we will have an opportunity to see the historic quarters once occupied by William Pitt the Younger and the Duke of Wellington. We will also see the apartment of some very recent Lord Wardens of the Cinque Ports, including Queen Elizabeth the Queen Mother who stayed during her time as Lord Warden. Before returning to the cruise terminal, we will see the Dover Patrol Monument offering dramatic views over the English Channel. From there, we will go down to the beach in St Margaret’s Bay, nestled underneath the towering White Cliffs. Following the coastline back to Dover, we will see South Foreland Lighthouse and Dover Castle, the largest Norman Castle in the country.
